The Big Toe
This spooky story has been a favorite in the Southern Appalachians. One day an old woman is working in her cabbage patch and finds a big toe in the garden. She takes it home to cook for supper.
Later that night when she goes to bed, a mysterious creature comes looking for its big toe!
The Big Toe is an old ghost story which has been told in the mountains for over 100 years. Ellie Kirby's neighbors modeled for the characters in the illustrations and Purrl, the “library cat” at the Grayson County Library, was a model for the old woman's cat.
Hardcover and paperback, 32 pages, color illustrations
